Holy Week Opportunities
Last night I led a Passover seder at an assisted living facility (I am a poor substitute for a rabbi, but they get me for free through my hospice chaplaincy day job!). The seder, of course, is a remembering, retelling, rehearsal for the story of God's deliverance of the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt. There was a phrase that came to me that I repeated a few times over the course of
the evening, "We remember—and in remembering, we become part of the story."
You see, it doesn't matter if the people of Israel were freed from Egypt if we are not being continuously freed from our own Mitzrayim (the Hebrew word for Egypt, meaning "narrow place").
The same is true for us Christians as we remember, retell, and rehearse the story of Jesus' death and resurrection. We are not just relating history. We are not just pulling out the well-worn
punched ticket to heaven. We are being invited, again, to become part of the story. To be reminded that there are many crucifixions that we have and do experience, that there are causes larger than ourselves for which we are called to lay down our lives, and that neither is the final word. We are called from death to life because love, the Good News, never dies!
I encourage you to find some time and space for reflecting on and practicing that over the next few
days.
Peace,
Pastor Jason
