There has always been a tension between our citizenship in our country of residence and our citizenship in the Kin-dom of God. Lately, for many of us, the tension has grown more profound. For those of us that are a part of the culture in power, we are beginning to better understand what our marginalized siblings have experienced over the centuries. Scripture and spiritual tradition are clear - we are citizens, first, of the Kin-dom of God. From Philippians, Jeremiah, and prophets ancient and modern, we are reminded of who we are, to whom we belong, and what we are to be about. And Bruce offered us a wonderful rendition of a song from a modern prophet, Bob Dylan. You can watch the service here. For many of you, the letter from Abigal Adams to John Adams after he left for the Continental Congress was new. You can read more about it here.
New Series Beginning July 6th!
Jesus was clear that "out of the heart the mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45 and Matthew 12:34.) Might we also change our hearts by being intentional about how we speak? Complaining and criticizing can keep us in a loop of despair and apathy. Practicing positive constructive speech shifts how we view the world, and if enough of us practice it, it might could change the world!
Beginning June 18th and conitnuing for several weeks, we will be engaing the book Building Up a New World in our Wednesday evening Together group. Many of us may be feeling understandably despairing these days. The chaos machine is hard at work trying to distract and
discourage us, making it hard to know where to turn or discern what to do. And it’s harder still to feel prepared and skilled in the ways we need to be to respond with loving compassion and justice-bringing passion. The good news is that every chapter in Building Up a New World: Congregational Organizing for Transformative Impact provides another tool in our organizing toolbelt, equipping us to do the work that is before us in this moment. From practicing mutual
aid, to creating community safety and becoming sanctuary, there are so many openings for you and your community to begin or deepen your journey of doing justice, loving kindness and walking humbly with God. You can join us on-site at 1415 North K ST in Lake Worth Beach, FL or online via Zoom (click here). For more information and resources about the group, check out our website.
Room Needed For Two Weeks Flavio Rapaio, our percussionist for the past few months, will be moving to Tampa in July to begin a Master's Degree program. His lease here ends at the end of June. He will be working as an instructor. with the Youth
Orchestra of Palm Beach County summer camp the first two weeks of July and needs a place to stay, which means we will have him for worship for three more weeks! If you have a room he can use, please let Bruce or Jason know. Thanks!
How To Keep Showing Up Without Burning Out Our friends over at Sojourners share an article from long-time faith and justice activist Wesley Granberg-Michaelson on how we continue with the work we are called to do. You can read the full article here.
He shares: "The witness of Christian faith in the public square, if done authentically, has always required spiritual alertness. New crises erupt almost daily, tempting us to endless reactivity. You will need inward spiritual grounding that can make a practical difference in political engagement,
social action, and outward witness. Your vision, starting point, and disposition will bear the distinctive features of the Christian witness that scripture and prophetic voices have and continue to note. I invite you to tend, sit, read, pray, and act. Let God ground your life. Over many years and many times of chaos, I’ve identified eight elements that contribute to a spiritually alert, faithfully rooted witness: - You know this world belongs to God.
- You engage the
world from a spiritual foundation.
- You act on the basis of call.
- You are committed to the long term.
- You display resilience.
- You detach from your ego.
- You don't demonize opponents.
- You are "grounded and rooted in love.
You can read descriptions of each of the elements in the full article.
Our friends at On Being have put together a a reflection/course experience curated by Krista and drawing upon her conversations with several visionary humans: adrienne maree brown, Naomi Shihab Nye, Ocean Vuong, Joy Harjo, Joanna Macy, and Ross Gay. Together, they extend rich and actionable invitations for a muscular, reality-based hope.
They offer ways of seeing and living to lay our hands and our hearts, our imaginations and life force on the generative possibilities of life in this time. You can find a link to the episodes, Substack, and journal on their website.
