Budget Talk

On Sunday, May 1st, Rev. Steve Lipman and Carol Lewis gave the presentation, "Your Tax Dollars: Where Do They Go and Who Reaps the Benefits?," on May 1 following the Coffee Hour in Studebaker Hall. It was free and open to the public. Thirteen members of our congregation joined Steve and Carol for some pizza and lemonade and then stayed for the event which included DVD clips, a hands-on demonstration, followed by a thoughtful and lively discussion. Six people from the community also attended and provided input. The project was hosted by our church and the materials and research were provided by a local grassroots organization called War VS Human Needs.

Further plans include a discussion about a Petition to President Obama and the Congressional Delegation regarding the redirection of military funds for Afghanistan. We will be meeting again after worship on June 5th.

For further information about this and other projects regarding the practical implications of living our faith in our world, contact Carol Lewis.

Further Thoughts on Community

A few weeks ago, I preached on Acts 2:42-47, the miracle of community that occurred or, at least, was idealized in the early church.

One thing I don't believe that I highlighted enough is the fact that community takes work. It is inconvenient. It is not "efficient."
An African Proverb I heard in an address by Kent Siladi states, "If you want to run faster, run alone. If you want to run farther, run together." I like it.

The More We Get Together...

Our website is helpful in keeping everyone up-to-date with what is happening "at church." But it hasn't been as helpful in facilitating us staying in contact with one another and actually being the church...until now...
