"Loving God, Loving Others, Serving the World"

Reaching Out...
Everything you will find in this edition of "Life@First Congregational" is either a way that you can help reach out into our city or an opportunity to invite someone to experience the love of God here at First Congregational Church.

As we have discussed over the past few weeks the very essence of the church is to reach out, bear witness of what Jesus the Christ has done in our lives, and to make disciples. Now, more so than in recent history, those around us are looking for an easy yoke and light burden, which is what Jesus has promised to those who follow him.

If you are like me, you might find yourself at a loss for words when friends ask, "Well, what does the United Church of Christ believe?" I ran across a helpful resource from the UCC called "What Matters," a description of six emphases that have, historically been important in our spiritual journey together. I list them here on my blog.

As always, I invite you to forward this email on to those you know who are looking for a vibrant, vital spiritual home.

                                                                             Peace,
                                                                             Pastor Jason

Parents' Nights

On Friday nights, November 7th, 14th, and December 5th from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Carol Lewis will be facilitating a class on parenting, centered on building bonds of love and trust between parents and children of all ages.

There is no charge for the class and nursery care will be provided. In addition, fun activities for children in kindergarten through 5th grade will be provided included crafts, games, and snacks.

If you would like to attend or if you would like to volunteer to help with the children's activities, contact Carol Lewis or sign up this Sunday.

"The Power to Change"

For many, if not most, there are patterns and habits in our lives that seem to control us and keep us from becoming everything we want to be. Often we feel completely powerless to break free and change. During November, we will look at powerful stories of change in scripture. The promise of our faith is that change is possible!

You will not want to miss Sunday, November 2nd as Jason uses the story of Jacob and explains how change is possible. There will be great music, including the song "Defying Gravity," from the musical Wicked. And, of course will gather together at the table of transformation as we take communion together.

Election Hospitality

On Tuesday, November 4th, hundreds of people will be coming to our church to vote. We want to put our best foot forward by providing great hospitality to the many who may be standing in line throughout the day. We need folks to bring by cookies and muffins. And if you are available, we would love to have you join us in greeting people and providing refreshments. You can sign up in the lobby on Sunday or email Jason.

The Reason

This Sunday, we finished up our series on "The Reason" looking at why we participate in the life of the church. This week we looked at the third part of our mission, serving the world. How do we go about serving the world? Both the source and the strategy of our service can be wrapped up in one phrase: faith works. It is through the transformation of our lives by the grace of God through faith in Christ that we can, in turn work for the transformation of our family, our city, and our world.

You can watch here, or listen and download here. The music video, "God of This City" is also available to view separately in case you just want to see that. (It's OK, Jason will never know)

Get In the Game

On Sunday, November 9th at 9:00 AM, we will have bagels. coffee, juice and great conversation for anyone interested in knowing a little more about First Congregational Church. If you have been attending and want to know more about what is involved in being a member of our church, this is a great opportunity for you. If you are a member and want to know more, this is for you too! If there is a question you have or an issue you have been scratching your head about, come and ask!
