"Loving God, Loving Others, Serving the World"

Volume 5, Number 2                                                                                        October 9, 2008

From the Pastor...

I apologize for the tardiness of this update. You will also find that much of this issue of "life@" is the same as last week's. I am in Atlanta at the Catalyst Conference. When I get back to my room at night I answer the emergency emails, pray, process a bit, and go to bed. What I am encountering here is that powerful. You can read some notes I've jotted on my blog.

I did, however, want to remind everyone about everything that was in last week's newsletter, especially the Discovery group with me this Sunday at 9:00 AM in the parlor (see below). There are also links to this Sunday's sermon in case you missed it. Next week we will begin a three week series on "The Reason," exploring why we do what we do, looking at loving God (and God loving us), loving others, and serving the world.

                                                                             Peace,
                                                                             Pastor Jason

Just For Youth...

Sunday evening, October 19th at 6:30 we're inviting all middle and high school students to join us for an evening of food, fun, friendship as we eat, play with and talk about food. We'll make our own pizzas and play Cheeto Head, Jello Relay, and Marshmallow and Spaghetti building. Curious? Come and find out what its all about and bring a friend!

This Week's Sermon
"Chasing the Wild Goose"

Like the rich young ruler who came to Jesus, we desire something else or something more for our lives. Often we find ourselves trapped by habits, fears, religion, and even our virtues. Our faith offers us the opportunity to break free and chase the wild goose (the Celt's name for the Holy Spirit). In following Jesus, our hearts and souls are transformed and we are empowered to accomplish God's greatest plans for us.
You can listen or download here or watch it here.

On Sunday, October 26th from 12 to 4 we will be having an old-fashioned community fall festival at the church. There will be hot dogs, a bounce house, sack races, corn eating contest, and lots more. We will be inviting the community and we have just received permission to invite the students from North Grade Elementary School to join us so we are expecting a big crowd. The event will be free to everyone. We are only asking that those who come bring a school supply for North Grade Elementary School.

We are looking at building some great bridges to our community at this event and would love to have as much help as possible. Contact Sue Cone or email us if you would like to participate.

Reverse Trick-or-Treat

On Saturday, October 18th, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, we will once again be reverse trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, giving out bags of candy and letting folks know that God loves them and we do too. We need two things from those reading this: a bag of candy or two, and volunteers to go door-to-door to help us distribute. Everyone who went last year got a huge thrill from giving the candy away. Let Jason know if you would like to participate.

Get In the Game

On Sunday, October 12th at 9:00 AM, we will have bagels. coffee, juice and great conversation for anyone interested in knowing a little more about First Congregational Church. If you have been attending and want to know more about what is involved in being a member of our church, this is a great opportunity for you. If you are a member and want to know more, this is for you too! If there is a question you have or an issue you have been scratching your head about, come and ask!
